Key Messages About Innovation Management

Innovation is about change

  • Often the change that is not related to technology and products
  • Often the change is driven by changes in the environment

Innovation and Research are different from Development

  • Managing Research as Development is counterproductive
  • R is about learning, D is about performance, R should encourage “surprises” while D should be tied to a “spec”

Organizations innovate successfully when:

  • Structure is organic & flexible; processes are open, participative & involve judgment

People innovate successfully when they:

  • Interact with the environment, and involved in diverse tasks
  • Get autonomy, and rewards for learning and trying as well as for performance
