“Breaking through gravity”

Summary of Key Talks

There are mindsets that prevent an organization from innovating.

1st mindset gravity

Deference

  • Deference to giants (consider changing the mindset of a defender into that of an attacker)- the actual course of ideas is from mindset into process/practice and then ideas. Ideas are influenced and limited by the mindset… there is a need to change the mindset.
  • Deference to market trends- can use them as one input, but not put them on a pedestal
  • To past success

They all limit conception of breakthrough.

The way out – create a breakthrough dialogue – uncover, deeply personalize and then act.

2nd mindset gravity

Identity Forward

  • Position (can always dice the market so small that you are a market leader…)
  • Brand
  • Category
  • Capability
  • A good story about the new newspaper in India that was based on a very broad “survey” and then coming back to the people with the actual offering referring to what they said in the first interview…. Co-creation with customers.

3rd mindset gravity

Insight

  • Not only about the observer but also about the observed- visible behavior that creates the frame of reference (limiting) and then identifies motives
  • The story about “chromosysnthesis“- a form of blindness –two groups were sensitized for this and oddly enough thought that they have it…
  • Grameen Bank … if this was citi – it would have been citi for the poor, and not the new creative structure of Grameen
  • The way out – breakthrough expedition:
  1. Validate - discovery
  2. External interview à mutually reflective dialogue (the bigger insights are usually for the person realizing his/her own limits)
  3. Usual - unusual sources

4th mindset gravity

Who will pursue?

  • MBO encourages to under promise and over achieve – will be difficult to create really new (out of the box) things
  • The way out: Need to burn bridges and remove escape buttons…
  • The way out: Re-anchor credibility
  1. Size of kingdom to size of challenge
  2. Maintenance to creation
  3. Business to cause (like the new malaria medicine)
  • Big ides don’t get killed, they get diluted. Stage gates = Killer gates!

5th mindset gravity

  • Gatekeepers ‘seek certainty’
  1. Actuary
  2. Board approval
  3. Wellness
  • The way out: excite the heart – the mind will follow.
  • The way out: tip the mind – versioning. A big promise but a low cost to try it out. They want to try it but cannot put big resources. Perform versioning (experimentation).
  • Top management engagement style is of:
  1. Download
  2. Debate
  3. Explorative
  • The individuals act unequal – they need to change this and focus on buy-in
  • Piloting is wrong – the mindset is “let’s see if it works” as opposed to “how do we make it work”….

Build around lighthouses and multiply believers – a type of a “social movement”.

In summary: there are three main Gravity Mindsets:

  1. Conception
  2. Pursuit
  3. Scale

If there is one thing to do and start with – identify an out of the box challenge (not ideas)

People who have a better chance of leading such changes:

  1. more excited by the size of the challenge and not the size of the future kingdom
  2. look at the market for recognitions, not their peers
  3. probably had diverse life experiences
